What is a Last Frost?

I originally thought a last frost was when it was assumed there would be no more frosts.  Ends up, my assumption was a little off.   A last frost is a date set by the NOAA which gives a guesstimate as to when there is a high probability that there will not be another frost during the season.  A frost is considered to occur when temperatures rest between a particular range. Depending on the season this can vary.

Remember… these are guesses based on averages.  Use common sense.  If it is a late winter and the temperature is still not warm enough to plant – then be patient and wait!

To figure out your last frost date visit the official National Climatic Data Center website which has a freeze-frost chart.   You can find it on other sites too such as this one.  I looked up my date, and it appears to be early April.  Therefore I need to start some of my seed planting as early as March – especially for my parsley which takes up to 6 weeks to germinate.

Hope this helps!
