If you haven’t seen the movie Julie & Julia, I highly recommend you do. It is a clean, fun movie which I found rather inspiring and plan to watch again.
The movie goes back and forth weaving between the lives of two different people in two different decades – the famous Julia Child’s and another girl named Julie living in NY, who writes a blog about her quest to prepare a Julia Child’s recipe every day for 365 days. Both are on a quest to learn how to cook.
Although the personalities were different, both of these characters had to overcome a few things in order to accomplish their quest of learning how to cook. These same principles they learned and had to put into practice, apply to many of us as well.
Here are 4 principles I discovered:
- Set a Goal. In both lives, Julie and Julia had set specific goals. These goals helped keep them motivated and on task. They weren’t weak goals either. They had meaning and if they accomplished their goals, they’d be all the better for it.
- Finding a Support Person/Group. Both women had a person in their lives who offered support. In both cases, it happened to be their husbands, but not everyone’s spouse may fit the bill. It could be a friend or neighbor, someone to talk to, and bounce ideas off of. Someone who would care enough to engage in conversation on the topic of food. These support lines are critical.
- Determination. This goes on the back of setting goals. But goals only serve any purpose if they are achieved, which requires determination, and persistence. If it were easy to achieve, it isn’t much of a goal which would better us in the end. In the case of the movie, determination and perseverance played a large role in each of their journeys.
- Take Action. One can sit all day looking at TV cooking shows, and reading recipes, but to get up and try something new is a whole other ball game. We can only meet our goals if we first take action.
If you look through the history pages of famous or well known chefs or cooks, many of them did not get to where they landed easily. And although we ourselves may not inspire to become famous, surely we’d like our own cooking efforts to be remembered by family and friends with a smile rather than a pitiful laugh – am I right?
For myself, I have to have a goal – otherwise I’m a lump on a log. At this point, my goal is to provide a new recipe each week for my readers, visitors and subscribers. I am determined to meet this goal which means more time in the kitchen, more time researching, more time testing and trying recipes and more time… well enjoying every morsel along the way.
Perhaps you have goals too. Maybe to learn more vegetarian meals, or more meat dishes. Maybe it’s simply to prepare more quality meals for yourself and family at home, rather than ordering out. Maybe it’s just to reduce your salt intake or caffeine. Maybe it’s to prepare more easy Italian recipes!
In summary: Set your goal, (it has to have practical and positive benefits), be determined, find a person who can be supportive and … lastly – go get started!
Feel free to comment and post your own words of advice!
