It was the Italians in Italy who introduced me to the concept of the stovetop espresso maker. And here I thought everyone Italy had a huge motor pumping espresso machine on their countertop! A stovetop espresso maker is very simple to use, clean and maintain. Simply unscrew it from the center, put water in the bottom part, espresso in the espresso filter, put the top back on and heat over a stove, gas or electric. The espresso maker can easily store on a cabinet shelf or in your pantry thus saving you space in your kitchen and work space.
How simple and quick is it really? I visited my sister a few weekends ago, she is a very busy person, you know the kind that wakes up early, and is up and out the door with maybe a piece of toast in hand. She works all day and on the way home grabs a bite to eat out or just nibbles when she gets in the house, cuddles with her cat, and off to bed unless she manages to fit in a few minutes reading before she really crashes. All that to say, it quite impressed me when I saw a little espresso maker sitting right on her stove. She won’t make an egg in the morning, I don’t even think she takes the time to have a bowl of cereal, but she will use this little neat convenient appliance… why? Because it is simple, easy and quick to use.
I have used these in the past, but the poor thing became pitted and I had to throw it out. I could not put it in the dishwasher, as this contributed to the pitting. I realized it was because it is made of aluminium and I learned that stainless steel, although a bit more in price, will avoid those problems. For the price of 1 stainless steel stovetop espresso maker, I could have avoided throwing out 3 aluminium ones out. In addition, the thought of having espresso made from a corroded aluminum based appliance just does not sound appealing.
I use mine to make a simple lattes. Heat the milk in a mug and pour in the espresso. That’s it!
Stainless steal espresso makers are hard to find in regular retail outlets, but on my site I list various types of espresso makers and machines to help you in your search. A picture of a stainless steal espresso maker is here to the right. Some designs are different, but their purpose is the same… long live espresso!
